These Hands written for my FIL Clyde Shallenberger

                      THESE HANDS

                                   By Laura E. Shallenberger

                                                        January 2021

 Preface:

When the Hospice Nurse came to the house after Dad arrived from the hospital she was giving us some care instructions.  One thing she told us was how to monitor Dad’s pain. One way to do that was to check his hands. If they were clenched that was a sign he was in pain. As I was sitting beside Dad’s beside I was checking his hands. Then I started thinking of all they accomplished in his almost 81 years of life. Then this poem emerged from my thoughts as I thanked God for his life and was praying for his peaceful departure from this world into the welcoming hands of Jesus.

These Hands

These hands might not look like much to you,

But to me they are hands strong and true.

These hands started a legacy dear to me

As they began a most important family tree.

These hands held another set of hands so tight,

Until he could muster the nerve to propose one night.

These hands held the hands of his soon to be bride

As they shared their vows and walked side by side.

These hands were the hands that must earn a good living,

Because to him this was the start of a new beginning.

These hands drove the car on that wonderful April day,

As his wife  was in labor, there could be no delay.

These hands held their firstborn bundle of joy,

His heart burst with love as he looked at his boy.

These hands, three more times made that drive

As his family grew and was beginning to thrive

These hands held another boy, then a beautiful girl,

And one more time, one last boy as their future unfurled.

These hands were part of building a comfortable house,

For his four children and his beautiful spouse.

These hands put together a rocking horse, race car tracks,

A Doll house, bicycles, and bicycle racks.

These hands worked on car engines and car bodies,

Taught his children about hard work and fun hobbies.

These hands could play the guitar to help sing a tune

As he entertained family and perhaps caused mom to swoon.

These hands help build one of the biggest ships on the Great Lakes.

Welded hospital sterilizers, until the unbearable neck and head aches.

These hands played pinochle, poker, volleyball and croquet

Went on camping trips, to Disney and got lost along the way.

These hands clasped in prayer at the family table,

And they disciplined in love to keep his family stable.

These hands walked his daughter down the isle

With great love, pride, a few tears and that smile.

These hands welcomed four more of us into the family.

He treated us like his own sons and daughters happily.

These hands held his firstborn grand daughter and grandson

Then five more grands, that brought him great joy and fun.

These hands reached out in love to the nine great grands,

As each one was lifted up with the gentlest of hands.

These hands often caused chaos, so much laughter,

Embarrassment in public, and perhaps a bit of disaster.

These hands have recently caught his own tears,

As he grieved the loss of his son youngest in years.

These hands that are scarred, bent and worn

Are the hands of a man we all love and will mourn.

These hands we’ve all held recently at his beside

Mean so much to me as I sit tonight by his side.

These hands you may think are just ordinary and plain,

No, they were not perfect, or even well maintained.

These hands why are they so special and important to me,

Because they lovingly raised the man I love and married you see.

These hands will soon be held by another set scarred and worn,

By A Man whose hands were bruised, pierced and scorned.

These hands will be clasped in the hands of Jesus his Lord,

Then our beloved Dad’s hands and body will be forever restored.

2020 Word of the Year FB entry:

MY 2020 Word is RHYTHM. I am in a new season of my life. For the first time since I was 16, I do not have a job. My employer of 29+ years has retired. I have 2 grand-babies and a third due to arrive any day. It is a beautiful new season; somewhere between Fall and Winter. I picture that last warm gorgeous day of Fall where the leaves are in their grand full glorious color-that is where I am at. Not quite ready for the Winter of my life, turning 58 next week, simply enjoying the golden color-filled days of my Fall. As I prayed about my WORD for this year, God led me to the word RHYTHM. I am entering a new type of movement in my life. I am a bit uncomfortable, yet so excited for what God has in store for me.  My life is out of it’s usual rhythm of certainty (as certain as one can ever really be); certainty of a daily routine, of going to the same place of employment every week, living out the same schedule, doing basically the same things week in and week out. Wash.Rinse.Repeat! 😉 My body is also in a different Rhythm; healing, stretching, adjusting. My mind says I am “39”, while my body says “I don’t think so!” In 2020 I will find my new balance, new “normal” (whatever that is!?!), new job, new grand-baby, new purpose, new challenges, new victories, new opptortunities, simply a new RHYTHM in my life, faith, family, work. I have always lived to the beat of a “different” drum, so listening for and adapting a new Rhythm seems like an amazing adventure waiting to happen in 2020...I’m ready❣️💯#2020wordoftheyear    #jeremiah2911 #isaiah4319 #matthew112930 ##rhythmandrenewal

2021 Word and Verses: FB entry>

2021 Word and Verse

This a long post. I am writing it out here mostly for me as I organize my thoughts. I also like to have my Yearly Word and Verse on my FB page. I would love if you would read the entire post. I would also appreciate any thoughts you have on my Word and Verse of the year. You can write them in the comments. Thanks in advance if you take the time to read and comment. I am blessed to have so many caring brothers’ and sisters’ in Christ💖.

I have been praying and contemplating my 2021 Word of the Year. I narrowed down the field to Balance, Create, Transform.  I was leaning toward Balance, but it just didn’t convey what I felt God was telling me where to head this year. Last year’s word was Rhythm. It was the perfect Word for 2020; a year that was out of rhythm in so many ways for all of us.  I feel God wants me to expand on all that I learned, surrendered and applied to the rhythms of my life last year.  I believe there is more He wants to bring all together in my life.

As I was researching each word I was considering; their meanings, their Biblical application, their relation to my life, I came across a word that I believe exemplifies all that God is speaking into my heart. The word is HARMONY. It seems like a very natural extension of last years word, Rhythm.  I need to take all the rhythms I learned, experienced, leaned into and applied last year and use them to bring harmony to my life, my whole life.

I believe God made us as whole beings and wants to bring wholeness and harmony to every area of our lives. He wants me to have harmony with myself, with others and most importantly with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The trinity; the best example of the truest form of harmony.

Simultaneously, God was revealing my 2021 verse of the year. I read Romans 12:2 and knew that was the verse.  The Phillips Translation (one of my mom’s favorite translations of the New Testament)with part of verse 1 says; “(vs.1) With eyes wide open to the mercies of God,...as an act of intelligent worship...(vs.2)> Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.” That verse, verse 2, screams harmony to me.

Harmony in my mind, my life’s activities and my relationship with God and the world. Harmony that leads toward wholeness in God. Harmony with the world, others>social wholeness; by not being conformed to the world, but yet still loving others with God’s love. Harmony in my mind>mental wholeness; God’s remolding of my mind from within.  Harmony in my life>physical wholeness; living out God’s plan and purpose for my life in every area of my life. Harmony with God>spiritual wholeness; livng in obedience with Him and moving toward the goal of true maturity. God’s wholeness is harmony beyond anything we could expereince without Him.  In fact, a definition of wholeness, from the Oxford dictionary, states; “the state of forming a complete and HARMONIOUS whole, unity.” The Vocabulary.com dictionary defines wholeness as; “an undivided or unbroken completeness or totality with nothing wanting”. That absolutely describes what God wants for each of us. He wants for us to be undivided, unbroken and wanting for nothing outstide of Him.

The New Living Version (NLT), the translation I am using for 2021, says; “Don’t copy to the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” That certainly simplifies the verse.

The Amplified Bible for Romans 12:2 says; “And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]. That spells it out well, as the Amplified Bible is meant to do.

Harmony in my life, living my life in God’s wholeness is done by applying Romans 12:1; seeing all of God’s mercies, “with eyes wide open”. How many of God’s mercies do I miss because my eyes are not open to them? How many mercies do I miss because I am not looking for them, not focused on Him, out of Harmony with Him?

When I deliberately am looking for and seeing all of God’s mercies I am living in harmony with all God has for me. When I am living in harmony with all God has for me (Rom. 12:2), I am

Committing an act of “intelligent worship” (Rom. 12:1).

LORD, enable me to live out Romans 12:1-2 in 2021 and the remainder of my life. I pray my learning about, living out and listening for your harmony reveals all of your mercies. I pray my studying of your Word, studying the word Harmony, and applying all that you reveal to me is an act of intelligent worship to you this year and the years to come. Amen.

2022 Word and Verse of the Year

 From FB 1/6/2022:

My 2022 Word of the Year is HOPE. This year I have decided to add an Old Testament Verse to my yearly tradition of Verse(s) of the Year.  My O.T. Verse is Isaiah 43:19. I know the verse does not use the word “hope” in the text. However, God promising to do something new in my life, in His Church, in my family, in our community, in our country, in our world gives me great HOPE!! My New Testament verse is Romans 15:13. God is my source of hope in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. I trust Him with all that I am and all that I hold dear. I know His joy and peace! My prayer for 2022 is that I will overflow with hope, so much so, that those in my circle of influence will trust and believe in the God of my hope and be filled with the joy and peace of Christ!!

REQUEST: Last year I asked you all to share your favorite verse and I would use it as my weekly verse one week out of the year and pray for you specifically that week. THIS YEAR…would you please find a verse that has the word ”hope” in it OR a verse that  gives you great hope and share it with me here. I will use that verse as my weekly verse one week this year and pray for you during that week. Thank You in advance for being a part of my spiritual journey in 2022!💖

I just have to give God praise here briefly (I could go on and on about what He has already done in my life so far in 2022). I start praying about my yearly word and verse(s) in December. God lead me to both of those right before Christmas. That in itself is a praise. But WAIT…THERE’S MORE…😉.  (2.)For the last several years (around 10 years +/-), I ask for a new Bible for Christmas from Bob.  The one I requested back in Sept./Oct. was the NLT Dayspring Hope and Encouragement Bible. When you preordered it you got a free Hope and Encouragement Devotional Journal. I requested this because it has journaling space on each page and was the NLT (which Bob preaches from). I had no idea what my Word nor Verse(s) for 2022 would be. 3) The next affirmation of my word and verse was on January 1st. The Verse of the day that I get texted to me was Romans 15:13. (4.) In the introduction of my 2022 daily devotional that I was reading on 1/1/22 the author uses my O.T. Verse and elaborated on Isaiah 43:18-19.  There have been other affirmations this past week and then today River preached on Isaiah 42-44 and specifically referenced and spoke on Chapter 43:18-19.  I just tell you all of that to say God is SO Good!! There are NO coincidences in God’s economy.  When we seek Him, read His Word and surrender to Him He always guides us, reveals Himself to us and shows His abundant love to us in so many ways. Do we not see it?…💖

Under the Shadow of The Cross

UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS

                                By Laura E. Shallenberger

Under the shadow of the cross,

I humbly come face to face

With God’s wondrous amazing Grace

Under the shadow of the cross,

My sin is laid open and bare

I can not blame, deny or defend it there.

Under the shadow of the cross,

I recognize my greatest enemy is from within

It is not trials or mistreatment, it is my own sin

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find that for all my sin He did atone

I am reconciled to God and will never be alone

Under the shadow of the cross,

I am no longer a victim, wandering and lost.

I am victorious and found, because Jesus paid my cost.

Under the shadow of the cross,

I get my sanity back and my joy will remain

For I am made brand new, never again the same.

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find the solution to any problem I may face,

A rescuing, redeeming, forgiving, transforming, loving grace,

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find protection, provision and indescribable peace

Here I find for all my anxiety a sweet release.

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find God’s boundless love for a rebel like me

I can now live a life so abundant and free

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find the greatest source of my strength

And recognize that God’s arms of love have unlimited length

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find courage for each and every day

Here all my fears quickly melt away

Under the shadow of the cross,

I am reminded that this world is not my home

I am merely a sojourner through this earth to roam

Under the shadow of the cross,

God is aware of all my todays’ sad  losses, deep grief, and painful sorrow

He gives me great comfort that those I mourn here, that loved Him, I will see in my eternal tomorrow

Under the shadow of the cross,

I find victory even over the grave and my death

Because Jesus conquered both with His first resurrection breath

Under the shadow of the cross,

I see the promise of Heaven my eternal home

I have no worries or fears of death’s unknown

Under the shadow of the cross,

There is unfailing love, overflowing redemption and never ending hope

Enough for today, tomorrow and all of my days to victoriously cope

Under the shadow of the cross,

There is room for me and there is room for you

Because God sent his son to die to pay our due

Under the shadow of the cross,

God’s invitation to come to Him is open wide

For He desires all of us to draw near to His side

Under the shadow of the cross,

I am reminded of who and who’s I am

You and I are a child of the Great I AM.

Under the shadow of the cross,

I humbly come face to face,

With God’s wondrous Amazing Grace!

Well, I said I wasn't going to blog in 2013, but  as I have posted the "windows into my soul" on Facebook I realized that if I posted it in the form of a blog that more people may be able to view it. While, my soul purpose in sharing my journal thoughts and devotional insight is not to see how many people view it,  God caused me to think about the impact He  could have through me and a broader reading list.
Original Post 1/2013:
FB Post:

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power  that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 1:18-20 NLT)

This scripture keeps popping into my devotional readings.  Yesterday and again today in 2 different venues.  Ok God-I think you are trying to tell me something...SO what is it, specifically?  I have used these verses as a text many times in my speaking opportunities.  I know full well what they mean, but what do you want them to mean to me, today, this year?
Could it be the "power" point (no pun intended); that I need to better understand the incredible greatness of God's power in Christ's resurrection, to fully embrace the power that is available to me through Christ's living? The power to alleviate   pain, the power to reverse depression, the power to change my cravings, the power to surrender and trust totally.  I need this resurrection power!  Lord, help me to tap into it, to plug into it, to allow you to fill me with it. Enable me to fully embrace the power I have in You through the Holy Spirit.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.
(JAMES 1:2)

"Consider" it, James challenges us with these carefully chosen, inspired words.  The fact of what James did not say, speaks more to this verse than what he does say.  He does not say embrace it,  or love it, or do it now! He says consider it!  The word consider means to think carefully about, think about it and be drawn towards it, take it into account, ponder it...  James knew that  when we face trials and temptations that our first response would not be joy! However, he challenges us to stop and ponder it as a possibility that our trials are a reason for joy. That God believes in us and wants us to embrace what I wrote about in light of the Ephesians scripture.  God allows trials in our lives so that we can consider,  think carefully about it, be drawn toward Joy and thus embrace the resurrection power of Jesus Christ.  Let's face it, if everything always went our way or as we planned or all honky-dory, would we ever be drawn toward God's joy and Christ' resurrection power?
I know in my life that I would not give Christ and his resurrection power any consideration if it were not for my faith. My faith is a result of my need for God. My need for God stems mainly from my difficult circumstances. Sure, I was raised in a Christian home, knew the truths of the Word-forgiveness, salvation, joy, etc... However, knowing these truths and experiencing them, embracing them are totally different.
SO, I am in a place where I have considered it pure Joy that I have trials.  Do I pray for trials? No, I am not there yet. However, I can honestly thank God for the trials in my life; some brought on by living in this sin-filled world and some brought on by my sin-filled choices.  Either way, I am joyful! Perhaps if I lived a life of trial free, utopia I never would have seen myself for the sinner that I was.Perhaps I would not have embraced my need for God's forgiveness and the need to be reconciled to Him through Christ's sacrifice for me on the cross.
No matter how I look at it, James' admonition makes more sense then ever before!  I consider it pure joy that I have trials,  equally importantly, I consider it am amazing gift and privilege to understand the incredible greatness of the power of Christ's resurrection that I have at my disposal to overcome any trial that comes my way.  My gratitude is great as is my joy!!!
